How exactly do you achieve your goals?
You deserve a pay increase. You want to buy a house. You agree that saving for retirement is important. And of course, your children’s education is top of mind.
So then what? For many of us, the goals we have move no further because we talk ourselves out of the objective or don’t know how to move forward.
Adriana James M.A., Ph.D notes, “that Goals are signs. Goals are indicators. A goal says, go here, go there, do this, reach for that. It’s a short-lived.” Dr. James asks how many people you know stop to ask themselves “Why am I so driven to achieve X now?” “What is the bigger picture of which this goal is only a part of?”
Notice that we are challeged to ask why do you want a pay increase? What is driving that need? What about a house? Is it to prove that you are smart or that you hate your current living conditions and why do you hate your current living conditions?
Yes, it can get deep.
You may have even decided to make your goals SMART, MEASURABLE, ATTAINABLE, REALISTIC AND TIMELY. And yet, the goals are still elusive. You simply are not getting what you want.
And that’s because you are not asking the right questions. The right questions comes from knowing the source of the goals.
So there is another path. In a previous article, we discussed your senses – how you recive information best. That is, some people are tacticle (feelers); visuals; auditory (hearing) or rely heavily on a sense of taste.
What if you were able to take your goals and use your senses to make them so real to you that achiveing those goals became a more easy process, even in the face of challenges?
This requires a different mindset. It requires you to believe that you have your goal right now even though it doesnt seem that way. How do you do that? By asking the right questions. Try these on for size.
Describe the Present Situation and compare it with the desired future goal.
- Where are you now?
- Where do you want to be?
- What do you want?
- State it in the positive (what you want to achieve).
- What are you going toward?
When I achieve my outcome…..
- What will I see?
- What will I hear?
- What will I feel?
- What will I smell?
- What will I taste?
Think about the things that you can control.
- What resources do you need to be able to achieve this?
- What do you need to do to achieve this?
- Is this something which you, yourself, can achieve?
- In this goal dependant on other people changing their behaviour?
With these sets of questions you can now begin to shape the reality that you want to achieve. You may need to sit down with your group of friends, a finanical coach or a licensed finanical advisor to flesh it out. However, it is well worth the time to ensure that you achieve the desires in your heart.
